  • Overview

    The Prevention Specialist works with identified schools supporting teachers, school counselors, students and their families in the prevention of substance abuse and misuse of prescription drugs by students.  The Prevention Specialist facilitates Life Skills-building groups for Middle School students, conducts parent meetings and makes presentations to provide prevention related information.   This is a one-year grant funded position with potential for a second year.

    Responsibilities

    • Works with teachers and school personnel to address prevention needs of middle school student among three Middle Schools within the School District.
    • Facilitates skill-building groups for youth.
    • Conducts parent meetings and makes presentations.
    • Attends team meetings as requested
    • Works with team members in ensuring service provision to members
    • Participates in supervision with team and direct supervision
    • Facilitates referrals to behavioral health and other community resources on behalf of students and families served.
    • Completes reports and progress summaries.
    • Maintains an approved schedule and acceptable level of attendance. Occasional evening work is required for monthly parenting group meetings.

    Qualifications

    • Education – Bachelor’s degree in a field related to Education or Behavioral Health preferred. HS/GED required.
    • Experience – Prior experience working with children/adolescents preferred.
    • Regulatory -
    • 21 years of age
    • Current, valid Arizona Driver’s License and 39 month Motor Vehicle Report to meet insurance requirements.
    • Eligible for DPS Level I fingerprint clearance.
    • First Aide, CPR certification (Employer provides).
    • Initial current negative TB test result, within the prior 12 months (Employer provides)
